Problem Statement

I keep each project in its own folder on my PC, but my chats only live in the Desktop app's sidebar. So a project's files are in one place and the chats about it are in another, and getting back to "the chat where we worked this out" means scrolling the sidebar.

Proposed Solution

Let me drag a chat out of the sidebar (or right-click → "Save as shortcut") into any Windows or Mac folder. That creates a small file named after the chat. Double-clicking the file reopens that same chat in the Desktop app, ready to continue: not a copy, not a new session.

Nice to have: the file name shows the chat title, and it works for both Code tab sessions and regular chats.

Alternative Solutions

  • Sidebar groups help inside the app, but they don't put the chat next to the project's files.
  • A hand-made Windows shortcut to the session's claude://claude.ai/epitaxy/<session-id> link is the closest workaround, but a regular user can't easily make one, and #95478 reports that link opening the app without opening the specific session (on iOS).
  • Exporting the transcript gives a read-only copy that can't be continued.

Related, but not the same ask: #90290 ("Copy link to session") would provide the link this builds on, and #90988 asks for external apps to be able to open a specific chat. This request is the user-facing piece: drag a chat out into a folder as a file.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

  1. I'm running a project that has its own folder on my Desktop.
  2. I drag the project's main chat from the sidebar into that folder.
  3. A week later I open the folder, double-click the chat file, and pick up the conversation where I left off, without searching the sidebar.
