Problem Statement

The folder picker above the chat input in the desktop app (Code tab) only shows "Recent" folders, ordered by last use. When working across many projects, the folders I use most are constantly pushed down or out of the list by one-off folders (temp folders, test repos, short-lived forks).

On top of that, several of my project folders share the same name: e.g. one "Standard" folder per product version (v6.0\Standard, v7.0\Standard, v7.1\Standard ...). The picker shows only the folder name, so the entries are ambiguous and it's easy to start a session in the wrong version's source tree.

Proposed Solution

Add a "Favorites" section at the top of the folder picker, visually separated from "Recent" by a separator line above and below it.

  • Mark as favorite: a star/pin icon appears when hovering an entry under "Recent"; clicking it adds the folder to Favorites
  • Custom order: drag & drop (or move up/down) inside Favorites, independent of last use
  • Custom display name: rename a favorite (e.g. "Product v7.1 Standard" instead of "Standard"); the full path is shown as a tooltip or secondary line
  • Remove: an "x" on each favorite to unpin it

Favorites persist across app restarts and updates and are never evicted by the Recent list's cap or ordering.

Alternative Solutions

Alternative: make the folder picker extensible by mods (plugin hooks), so users can build this themselves.

Mods can currently only render inside a running session (AbovePrompt, Pane, transcript components). The folder picker is app chrome shown before any session exists, so no mod can reach it. What would be needed:

  • a renderable component for the picker (e.g. ui.render with component 'FolderPicker'), or a hook that receives the folder list and returns it modified (extra sections, separators, ordering, display names, hidden entries)
  • an action a mod can call to select a folder / start a session in a given folder
  • mods loaded at app level (not only per session), with $.store available to persist the list

Current workaround: none inside the app. I'd have to keep a separate list of paths and use "Open folder..." each time, which defeats the purpose of the picker.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

  1. I maintain one product in several versions, each with its own source tree containing a "Standard" folder, plus a few tool repos and customer-specific forks.
  2. I pin the 5 folders I use daily and rename them, e.g. "v7.1 Standard", "v7.0 Standard", "Status App", "Tools".
  3. I order them by importance: the current version first.
  4. Every new session: open the picker, the favorites are at the top in my order with clear names, one click, done.
  5. One-off folders (tmp, a customer fork I looked at once) still appear under "Recent" but never displace my favorites.

Additional Context

Related issues (none covers this request completely):

  • #95472: Recent list capped at 8; mentions pinning as one possible fix, but no custom names/order
  • #72181: no way to remove entries from the Recent list
  • #67249: remember recent directories; favorites only as an optional extra (closed as not planned)

Platform: Windows 11, Claude desktop app, Code tab.
