[BUG] Cowork: prompt change on a "Require this computer" scheduled task fails under "Skip all approvals" (needs_device_approval, no card); "Automatically approve" works
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Claude Cowork, desktop app on macOS. From a Cowork session linked to my computer, Claude changes the instructions of a scheduled task that has "Require this computer" on, using the Claude Code Remote MCP tool update_trigger.
With the session's approval mode on Skip all approvals:
- no approval card appears;
- the call returns
needs_device_approvaland nothing changes; - neither the result nor the tool's description mentions the approval mode. The description only says a new prompt "takes effect only when the person approves this call in a Cowork conversation linked to that same computer", so Claude tells me to make the change by hand. Switching the approval mode, which is the actual fix, never comes up.
With Automatically approve, same session, same task, same call: a card with an Update button appears, one click, and the server confirms prompt re-signed by Claude Desktop (macOS) — this scheduled task still requires that computer.
So for this action the mode meant to ask least is the only one where the change can't be made at all.
What Should Happen?
- "Skip all approvals" should cover this approval too. Skip should mean skip.
- If the signature has to come from a person by design, show the card in every mode instead of refusing without one, and have
needs_device_approval(and the tool description) name the fix: switch the session to Automatically approve and retry. - Document it. The help pages don't say that prompt changes to computer-bound tasks need a signed approval, or that Skip all approvals can't give one.
Error Messages/Logs
# Skip all approvals — update_trigger with a new prompt on a computer-bound task
status: needs_device_approval (no card shown, prompt unchanged)
# Automatically approve — same call, same session, same task

prompt re-signed by Claude Desktop (macOS) — this scheduled task still requires that computer
Steps to Reproduce
- In the Claude desktop app on macOS, have a Cowork scheduled task with "Require this computer" on.
- In a Cowork session linked to that computer, set the approval mode to Skip all approvals.
- Ask Claude to change that task's instructions.
update_triggerreturnsneeds_device_approval; no card appears; the prompt is unchanged.- Switch the approval mode to Automatically approve and ask again.
- A card with an Update button appears. Click it: the prompt is re-signed and saved.
Not tested: Manually approve.

- #92740: the same pattern for the first Artifact publish. It fails under Skip all approvals because it needs a card, and works under Automatically approve (a comment there says Manually approve works too). That error doesn't name the mode either.
- #92268:
create_triggerwithrequires_local_device: truereturnsnot bound: no_signed_approvalwith no card anywhere. Possibly the same cause. I hit it in the same session (not bound: no_signed_approval — this task does not require a computer and will run in the cloud only) but didn't note which mode was on at the time. Turning on "Require this computer" for that task in the app afterwards worked on 2.19675.x. - #97341: the device re-sign path for scheduled-task edits.
