Problem Statement

In the Claude desktop app (Code tab), the Rewind button sits right next to the Copy button on each message. While browsing an old session, I scrolled to the very first message to copy my original prompt and clicked Rewind by mistake.

The session immediately rewound to its initial state:

  • No confirmation dialog appeared.
  • There was no way to undo it.
  • The whole conversation was effectively gone from the app.

The original transcript (.jsonl under ~/.claude/projects/) was actually still on disk — the app had just switched the session to a new, empty transcript — but there was no way in the app to get back to it. I could only recover it by finding the file manually and running claude --resume <id> in a terminal.

Rewinding to the first message is the most destructive rewind possible, yet it takes a single click, the same as Copy.

Proposed Solution

Show a confirmation dialog before rewinding, e.g. "Rewind to this message? N later messages will be removed.", at least when rewinding past more than a few messages. An optional "Don't ask again" checkbox would keep it lightweight for people who prefer one-click rewind.

Alternative Solutions

  • An undo toast ("Undo" for a few seconds) after a rewind, or a way in the app to return to the pre-rewind transcript, since it is still kept on disk.
  • More spacing between Copy and Rewind, or moving Rewind into a "…" menu, so the destructive action isn't next to a frequent, harmless one.
  • A rewind event in the plugin/mod hooks API, so users can add their own confirmation.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

  1. I open an old session in the desktop app's Code tab.
  2. I scroll to the very first message to copy my original prompt.
  3. I aim for the Copy button but hit Rewind, which sits right next to it.
  4. Today: the session is instantly reset to empty, with no prompt and no undo.
  5. With a confirmation dialog, I would just click "Cancel" and lose nothing.
