What's Wrong?

Claude Desktop on macOS stopped refreshing plan usage in the background, and there is no way to turn it back on.

Since Oct 2 the app's background plan-usage poll requires the tray usage menu to have been opened in the last 24 hours. The log shows the config arriving with a feature-flag refresh (the app was not updated at that moment) and the poll pausing 15 minutes later.

But on my Mac the usage menu can't be opened: both left-click and right-click on the menu bar icon open Quick Entry (Using native Quick Entry overlay). The log has no [tray-usage] entry at all. So the poll stays paused permanently, and usage only refreshes once each time the app is restarted.

I use the Code tab in the desktop app all day, but that doesn't count as "opened recently", so the usage data stays hours out of date.

Related, but a different platform and closed as stale: #85343 (Windows, right-click tray no longer shows usage).

What Should Happen?

Either of these would fix it:

  • Right-clicking the menu bar icon opens the usage menu (as on other setups), so the "opened recently" condition can actually be met, or
  • Using the app window (e.g. the Code tab) counts as recent activity, or background polling continues while the app is in use.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Run Claude Desktop 2.19675.0 on macOS with the menu bar icon enabled.
  2. Right-click (or left-click) the menu bar icon: Quick Entry opens, not the usage menu.
  3. Keep using the app (including the Code tab) for more than 15 minutes.
  4. main.log shows background poll paused: tray not opened recently. Plan usage is not refreshed again until the app is restarted.
