Plugin skill files can't be found after a claude.ai chat moves to a cloud session
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
When a claude.ai chat uses a skill from an installed plugin, Claude is told the skill lives in /mnt/skills/plugins/<plugin>:<skill>. Reading the skill's files from there works at first.
If the chat then moves to a cloud session (in my case, as soon as Claude ran Grep), the same path stops working. Every read or search there fails with "does not exist".
The cause seems to be the cloud session's setup script, ~/.claude/session-start-chat-skill-paths.sh. It links /mnt/skills/plugins to the folder for account skills, ~/.claude/skills/synced/<org>_<account>. Plugins are synced somewhere else, to ~/.claude/plugins/synced/<org>_<account>/<plugin>, and no <plugin>:<skill> folder exists anywhere. So no plugin skill's files can be found at the path Claude was given.
What Should Happen?
The path Claude is given for a plugin skill keeps working after the chat moves to a cloud session.
Error Messages/Logs
Path does not exist: /mnt/skills/plugins/<plugin>:<skill>
File does not exist: /mnt/skills/plugins/<plugin>:<skill>/knowledge/company/systems.md
Steps to Reproduce
- On claude.ai, add a plugin (Settings > Plugins) whose skill links to a bundled file, for example
knowledge/team.md. - Start a new chat and ask something that makes Claude load the skill, read that file, then search the skill's folder. For example: "Who handles IT at <company>? Then grep the notes for 'Linear'."
- The first read works. The search that follows fails with "Path does not exist".

Additional Information
- Loading the same skill inside the cloud session gives the right folder. Only skills loaded in the chat before the move are affected.
- Claude sometimes recovers, but only when the plugin's own SessionStart hook happens to print its real folder. In one session the plugin finished syncing after the startup hooks had run, so that hook never fired and Claude had no way to find the files.
- Seen in two separate claude.ai chats.
- Related but different: #64461, #37689.
