[GitHub integration]

What were you trying to do?
I wanted Claude (in claude.ai chat and in Claude Cowork) to read and write files in my GitHub repositories.
I use GitHub not only for programming but also for knowledge management. My repositories are where I store documents, design notes, decision records, and research materials. So I need Claude to be able to commit to them directly from chat and Cowork, not only from Claude Code.
Currently:
- The GitHub App is installed on both my personal account and my organization, and the connection shows as successful.
- However, the integration is labeled "Cloud sessions only". In chat, I can only attach files from a repo (read). In Cowork, the session has no GitHub credentials, so
git clonefails and nothing can be written. - The only workaround is to go through a third-party service such as Zapier, which is cumbersome and adds another party between my data and Claude.
For comparison, ChatGPT can read and write GitHub repositories in both its chat and its Work mode.
Request: please allow GitHub write access (commit / push, or at least creating and updating files) from claude.ai chat and Cowork, using the existing GitHub connection.
What happened instead?
