Problem Statement

Problem

I prefer to work in the terminal, but cloud sessions (Claude Code on the web)
can only be chatted with interactively from the web UI, mobile app, or desktop
app. There is no way to have an interactive, back-and-forth conversation with a
cloud session from the terminal while it keeps running in the cloud.

Current CLI options don't cover this:

  • claude -p "<msg>" --cloud <session-id> can send a message to an existing

cloud session, but there is no way to read the reply from the terminal, so it
can't be used as a conversation.

  • claude --cloud "<task>" creates a cloud session, but doesn't provide

interactive chat with it.

  • claude --teleport moves the session to the local machine, so it no longer

runs in the cloud.

  • claude remote-control runs the session locally, not in the cloud.

Proposed Solution

Proposed solution

Allow attaching the terminal to a running cloud session as a thin client, e.g.:

claude --cloud <session-id> --attach

The session keeps executing in the cloud container. The terminal is used only
to send messages and stream responses (including tool activity and permission
prompts), just like the web UI but in text. Detaching should leave the session
running, and it should stay available from web/mobile at the same time.

Alternative Solutions

Alternatives considered

  • Using the web UI: works, but forces a context switch away from the terminal.
  • Teleport / Remote Control: both move execution to the local machine.
  • Headless browser automation: fragile and impractical.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

Use case

  • Terminal-first workflows: using cloud sessions without leaving the terminal
  • Keeping long-running work in the cloud (no need to keep the local machine on)
  • Switching between web/mobile and terminal on the same cloud session
  • Also useful for environments without a GUI (e.g. SSH-only machines)

Additional Context

Related

  • #97450 – headless/programmatic start, read, and stop of cloud sessions (for

scripts and agents). This request is about interactive human chat from a
terminal instead.

  • #44063 – resume any session in the CLI (runs locally afterwards, not in the cloud).

Environment

  • Claude Code version: 2.1.283
