[BUG] Model picker (Alt+P) is cut off in windows under 40 rows, so the effort line and key hints are hidden
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
The model picker now lists 11 models for me (Default, Opus 5.5, Fable 5.1, Sonnet 5, Haiku 4.5, Opus 5, Fable 5, Opus 4.8, Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, +1 more). It no longer fits in a Windows Terminal window of the default size (120x30). The picker shows 8 model rows and stops at the bottom edge of the window. The effort line (○ Low effort ←/→ to adjust) and the key hints (Enter to set as default · s to use this session only · Esc to cancel) are not drawn. ←/→ still change the effort, but you can't see what you picked.
Same session, picker open, only the window height changed:
- 30 to 39 rows: no effort line
- 40 rows: the effort line is the last row, the key hints are still hidden
- 49 rows: everything is visible
The number of model rows comes from Math.max(2, Math.min(10, Math.floor((rows - 14 - ...) / 2))), but with fullscreen rendering the picker got only the bottom part of the screen: 13 of 30 rows, 17 of 39, 18 of 40. So the list is sized for more room than the picker gets.
What Should Happen?
The effort line and the key hints stay visible. For example, show fewer model rows when the window is short (the list already scrolls: ↓ and … +1 model).

Additional Information
In mid-September (2.1.274) the picker listed 5 models and the effort line fit in a 30-row window. Only the key hints were cut off then.
Environment: Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26200, Windows Terminal, Claude Max plan, fullscreen rendering. I have not tried the classic renderer.
I noticed it because my small tray tool, LightEffort, sets the effort from a hotkey by reading this line. It now tells the user to make the window taller.
