Problem

The Claude desktop app only exposes a small, fixed set of keyboard shortcuts (e.g. voice input). Common actions like changing the model or effort level require the mouse. ~/.claude/keybindings.json works in the CLI but does not apply to the desktop app.

Proposed solution

An IDE-style keybindings editor in desktop Settings, where any app command can be bound to a key combination:

  • Change model / cycle models
  • Change effort level (up / down / set)
  • Toggle fast mode, permission mode, plan mode
  • New session, switch sessions, open panes (diff, terminal, browser)
  • Voice input, submit, stop

Nice to have:

  • Searchable command list with current bindings and conflict detection
  • Reset to defaults
  • Import/export, or read the same keybindings.json the CLI uses

Prior art

OpenAI Codex's desktop app lets users set custom keybindings for its commands, similar to VS Code / JetBrains.

Why

Power users switch model and effort many times per session; doing it from the keyboard saves time and matches how people already work in their IDEs.
