Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Published artifacts no longer show a "Version history" option anywhere: not in the claude.ai web viewer's title menu, and not in the Claude desktop app's artifact side panel. Earlier versions are still being saved (each publish returns a new version number), but owners have no way to see or open them. This affects Claude Code and Cowork artifacts, and claude.ai chat artifacts as well.

Actual

  • Web viewer menu: Export, Copy as Markdown, Rename, Duplicate, Share, Refresh, Pin, All artifacts, Report artifact, Delete artifact.
  • Desktop panel menu: Switch artifact, Export, Copy as Markdown, Rename, Duplicate, Share, Open in web, Refresh, Pin, Report artifact, Delete artifact.
  • No Version history in either. The Share menu has no version picker either.
  • Older artifacts that previously showed Version history (e.g. one last updated July 6, 2026) no longer show it.

Impact
Version history is the only way for an owner to see and open earlier versions. Without it, saved versions are unreachable: you can't even see which versions exist to ask for one. Asking Claude to republish an older version isn't a workable replacement.

What Should Happen?

A "Version history" entry (previously shown as "Version history (count)" between Share and Refresh) that lists every published version and lets the owner open any of them. The docs still describe this: "Each publish becomes a version, and from the Share control in the page header you can choose which version viewers see." (https://code.claude.com/docs/en/artifacts)

Please restore Version history in the web viewer and the desktop app, for Claude Code, Cowork and claude.ai artifacts, and confirm that earlier versions of existing artifacts are retained. If this was changed on purpose, please document the supported way for owners to view and restore earlier versions.

Error Messages/Logs

No error message. The menu option is simply missing.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Publish an artifact from Claude Code, then republish it to the same URL two or more times. The Artifact tool confirms Version 1, 2, 3...
  2. Open the artifact in the claude.ai web viewer and click the drop-down arrow next to its title.
  3. Open the same artifact in the desktop app's side panel and click the title drop-down.

Is this a regression?

Yes, this worked in a previous version

Last Working Version

Last seen working within the week before Sep 24, 2026. Until Sep 22 the desktop app was 2.2553.13.0; it then updated to 2.7032.0. Exact claude.ai version at that time unknown.

Claude Code Version

2.1.258, bundled with Claude desktop app for Windows 2.7032.0 (6c468a), the latest version the app installs (checked after a full restart on Sep 24, 2026).

Environment

  • Windows 11 Pro
  • Claude desktop app 2.7032.0 (Claude Code 2.1.258)
  • claude.ai in Edge
  • Reproduced on two separate accounts (Pro and Max) on two separate machines

Timeline

  • Sep 1, 2026: Version history tested and working in the web viewer. Still seen working within the week before Sep 24.
  • Sep 18, 2026: #95442 reports the version picker missing from the Share menu. It was later closed by its author, with no response from Anthropic and no fix.
  • Sep 24, 2026: confirmed missing on two accounts, two machines, web and desktop.

Support: I filed two support cases and a follow-up (Sep 24, 2026). None were acknowledged by email, and Anthropic's support AI agent (Fin AI Agent) said there is no tracking or ticket number for bug reports.

If I click an artifact via https://claude.ai/artifacts, it shows no version info in the upper right corner. If I then refresh the page it appears. In case it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion, @ddgunter. You said that after opening an artifact from https://claude.ai/artifacts and refreshing, version info appears in the upper right corner. I tried that on both of my accounts and it doesn't work for me.

Steps (same on both accounts, Edge on Windows 11; on the Pro account I also checked in the Claude desktop app, version 2.9939.2):

  1. Went to https://claude.ai/artifacts
  2. Opened an artifact that has more than one version
  3. Refreshed the page
  4. Checked the upper right corner for version info

Results:

  • Pro account (artifact with 2 versions): no version info in the upper right corner, before or after the refresh.
  • Max account (artifact with 10 versions): no version info in the upper right corner, before or after the refresh.

For me, version info has never appeared in the upper right. Version history was always in the title menu on the left, and that's where it went missing. I checked there too: it's still missing on both accounts. It was there until a few days ago, then disappeared.

Could you share a screenshot of what you see in the upper right after the refresh? It would also help to know:

  • Which browser, or whether you're using the desktop app
  • Your plan (Pro / Max / Team)

Additional findings (Sep 26, 2026):

  1. Timing: The Sep 16 release notes announce that artifacts now include Claude Design, Slides, and Docs. Since Claude Code artifacts are hosted and viewed on claude.ai, this looks like a change to the same artifact system. I found no release notes or changelog entries mentioning any change to version history.
  1. Versions are still being recorded: Claude Code 2.1.283 (Sep 25) fixed publishes failing on version labels over 60 characters, and the Artifact tool confirms each new version number. Owners just can't view them.

Update: still reproduces on the latest Claude desktop app, 2.9939.2 (Sep 24 build), on both Pro and Max accounts.

Pro and Max subscribers received no notice of this change. Please confirm whether it's a regression or intended, and whether saved versions will be viewable again.

Actually, I was wrong. Refreshing DOES show the version number for an artifact that was updated today, but for my other artifacts it does not. And NONE of my artifacts show any kind of dropdown with other versions, so there is no way to share the latest version. Brave browser. My artifacts are at https://claude.ai/artifacts. Pro version for me. I usually have Claude Code update the artifacts as necessary, head over to them at https://claude.ai/artifacts, select the latest version to share, and done. Can't do this now. Seems the versioning interface is entirely broken.
