[BUG] Windows: orphaned Vite processes block Claude Desktop launch after update (0x80070020)
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
After updating Claude Desktop from 2.2553.1.0 to 2.2553.13.0 on Windows 11 (build 26200), launching it failed with:
Another program is currently using this file.
Windows AppModel-Runtime logged Event 215 (AppX container creation failed during job conversion) and Event 208, both with 0x80070020.
Confirmed cause: A vite preview --port 4174 --strictPort server previously launched through Claude remained running after the update. Querying the old version’s AppX job object revealed five surviving bash, node, and cmd processes.
Verified fix: Terminating only those processes immediately destroyed the old container. The updated Claude launched successfully one second later, without rebooting. Restarting CoworkVMService had not resolved it.
Expected behavior: The updater should handle surviving child processes before switching versions, or identify the blocking processes instead of displaying a generic file-in-use error.
What Should Happen?
Claude Desktop should update and relaunch successfully even when a previously started background process is still running. If a child process prevents the update, the app should identify it and offer a clear way to resolve the issue instead of showing a generic “file in use” error.
Error Messages/Logs
Another program is currently using this file.
Steps to Reproduce
- Open Claude Desktop on Windows and start a local Vite preview server through a Claude Code session:
npx vite preview --port 4174 --strictPort
- Leave the preview server running.
- Install a Claude Desktop update and restart the app.
- Attempt to launch Claude Desktop again.
- Observe the “Another program is currently using this file” error (0x80070020).
Observed on my machine: The preview server’s child processes survived the update and remained in the previous version’s AppX container. Terminating them allowed Claude to launch immediately.
Confirmed for one update; reproducibility across other updates has not been tested.
