[FEATURE] Answer AskUserQuestion options directly from the push notification on iOS
Problem Statement
When a session runs on the desktop and I am away from the machine, Claude Code
pushes a notification to my phone saying input is needed. The notification
carries no part of the question: not the options, not even the question text.
To answer, I unlock, open the app, find the session, read the question, and tap.
That is a full context switch for what is often a one-tap decision between two
or three obvious options. In practice the session just waits until I am back at
a screen.
Claude Code already knows the entire shape of the question at push time.AskUserQuestion carries a header, the question, and up to four labelled
options, each with a one-line description. None of it reaches the notification.
Proposed Solution
Carry the question in the push payload, and register a notification category so
the options become notification actions.
- The collapsed banner shows the question itself, not "input needed".
- Expanded, by pulling down on the lock screen or long-pressing the banner,
each option is a row: its label plus its description.
- Tapping an option answers it and the session continues, without unlocking
into the app.
- One additional text-input action, "Other", opens the standard inline reply
field for a free-form answer. The same field Messages uses.
- iOS caps the number of visible actions. Options beyond the cap collapse into
"Open in Claude Code", which is today's behaviour, so nothing regresses.
Concretely this is a UNNotificationCategory with one UNNotificationAction
per option and one UNTextInputNotificationAction for "Other", with the option
list carried in the payload. Same shape on iPadOS, and the Apple Watch mirror
inherits notification actions for free.
Mockup attached: today's banner on the left, the two proposed states on the
right.
Alternative Solutions
- Today's behaviour. Unlock, open the app, find the session. It works. The
cost is a full context switch for a decision that takes one tap.
- Routing questions through a third-party push service that already
supports actionable notifications, and blocking on the reply. Workable, but
it means bypassing AskUserQuestion entirely, so the desktop UI, plan mode
and multi-select all lose the question. It also puts the question text
through a third party.
- Answering from the Apple Watch. Same limit: the mirrored notification
has nothing to act on.
Priority
Medium - Would be very helpful

Other (iOS app and push notifications)
Use Case Example
- I start a refactor on the desktop and leave for a meeting.
- Ten minutes in, Claude reaches a branch point and asks: "Which auth method
should I wire up?", with three options and a recommendation.
- Today: my phone buzzes with "Session needs your input". I either ignore
it, or unlock, open the app and find the session. The session waits until
the meeting is over.
- With this: the banner shows the question. I pull it down, read the three
options with their descriptions, tap "Session cookies", and put the phone
back down. The session continues while I am still in the meeting.
Additional Context
The mockup image shows three states: the banner as it is today, the expanded
notification with the options as actions, and the "Other" text field with the
keyboard up on the lock screen. It is a mockup, not a screenshot.
This request is about the Claude iOS app and the Remote Control push path, not
the CLI. Remote Control is already enabled here
(remoteControlAtStartup, inputNeededNotifEnabled, agentPushNotifEnabled),
so the delivery channel exists and only the payload and the category are
missing.
