Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report
  • [x] I checked the latest version (2.1.270 changelog): the behavior is unchanged since 2.1.268

What's Wrong?

Since 2.1.268 the IDE indicator ("PyCharm connected", "N lines selected", the selected file/location) is drawn inside the prompt input area, on the left, instead of in the status/footer line at the bottom right.

The changelog entry for 2.1.268 says: "Improved the prompt footer: an editor or /diff selection now shows inside the prompt input".

The new placement takes a big part of the prompt width. In a normal-width terminal the text I type gets squeezed next to the IDE text, and it shifts every time the selection changes. There is no setting, env var, or /config toggle to move it back to the footer or hide it.

Because of this I pinned Claude Code to 2.1.267 with the autoupdater off, so I am also missing every fix since then.

What Should Happen?

One of:

  • Keep the IDE/selection info in the footer/status line as in 2.1.267, or
  • Add a setting (e.g. in /config or settings.json) to choose footer vs. prompt input, or to hide it.

Error Messages/Logs

None. This is a layout change, not an error.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install Claude Code 2.1.268 or newer (native install).
  2. Open a project in PyCharm with the Claude Code JetBrains plugin, so the IDE is connected.
  3. Start claude in a terminal (WezTerm here) in the same project.
  4. Select a few lines in the PyCharm editor.
  5. Look at the prompt area: the IDE/selection text sits inside the prompt input on the left and shrinks the typing area.
  6. Run the same steps on 2.1.267: the text is in the bottom status line and the prompt input is full width.

Claude Model

Not relevant (UI only).

Is this a regression?

Yes, this worked in a previous version.

Last Working Version

2.1.267

Claude Code Version

2.1.268 (also 2.1.269, 2.1.270 by changelog). Pinned back to 2.1.267 (Claude Code).

Additional Information

  • Install method: native (~/.local/share/claude/versions/<ver>), DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER=1, autoUpdates: false.
  • IDE: PyCharm 2026.2 with the Claude Code JetBrains plugin (ideName: "PyCharm", ws transport).
  • Not using fullscreen mode. A custom status line command is configured (statusLine in settings), which is another reason I want the IDE info to stay on that line and not in the prompt.
