Desktop app: no way to restore the git/branch bar after dismissing it with the X button

What happened

In the Claude Code desktop app (Code tab), the bar at the top of a conversation shows the repo name, current branch, the branch diff stats (+2,229 -376), a Create PR button and an X on the right.

I clicked the X. The bar disappeared for that conversation and has not come back since, across a long session with many messages.

Expected

Some way to bring it back: a toggle, a menu item, a keyboard shortcut, a slash command, or at minimum automatic reappearance when the branch changes or new commits land.

Notes

Several commits were made on the branch afterwards (so the diff stats changed) and the bar still did not reappear. Nothing in the docs, /config, or settings.json appears to control its visibility.

Why this matters

The bar is the only always-visible indicator of which branch the session is working on. Losing it is easy — the X sits right next to the Create PR button — and on a repo where you switch between the default branch and a working branch, not seeing the current branch is how commits end up on the wrong one.

Related

  • #48765 and #57872 ask for the opposite: a way to hide the Create PR bar.

Together these suggest the same gap: the bar's visibility has exactly one control, the X, and it only works in one direction. A single persisted toggle would resolve all three requests.

Environment

  • Claude Code desktop app on Windows 11
  • Git repository, working branch ahead of the default branch

Did you manage to recover the files? They may still be there as dangling refs. Claude will take the wheel

Same issue here on Windows 11 Pro (build 26200), desktop app 2.16120.0. The scope of the dismissal is wider than one conversation and it survives an app restart.

I clicked X on the bar in one session (Session A, in <repo-A>). After fully restarting the app:

| Session | Repo | Bar visible? |
|---|---|---|
| Session A (where X was clicked) | <repo-A> | No |
| Two other existing sessions | <repo-A> | Yes |
| A new session | <repo-A> | Yes |
| All existing sessions in other repos, including ones with uncommitted changes | <repo-B>, <repo-C>, ... (some are subfolders of <repo-A> but separate git repos; others are unrelated) | No |
| A new session | <repo-B> | No |

  • Branch name and sidebar group don't matter.
  • Neither restarting the app nor starting a new session restores the bar in affected repos.
  • I couldn't find any setting in the app's local config files that controls this, so there's no way to reset it by hand.

+1 for a visible toggle (setting or menu item) to show the bar again.
