Images always show [Unsupported Image] on Claude Desktop (Windows)

Since I installed Claude Desktop on Windows, every image I send shows [Unsupported Image] and the assistant cannot see it. The files are valid PNG/JPG and open fine locally. It has never worked. Text chat works normally.
The workspace also fails to start: "Failed to start Claude's workspace - RPC error -1: SDK version 2.1.260 not verified". I know about the known Windows update issue from Sept 8, but the image problem existed before that.
