Problem Statement

Title: [FEATURE] Add a setting to disable sound effects in the Claude Desktop app

Problem

The Claude Desktop app plays sound effects with no way to turn them off. There are at least two:

  1. A chime when a response completes.
  2. A chime when dictation starts and stops.

Worse, the completion alert does not fire once. It pulses repeatedly and keeps going, so a single response produces a run of chimes rather than one. Whatever the intent, the effect is an alert that nags until it is acknowledged, which is unacceptable for a sound that cannot be turned off. However, the goal is to have audio alerts completely disabled.

These are played by the app itself, not by macOS. Turning off notifications for Claude in System Settings does not silence them. The Settings panel in the app has no audio section at all. I'm mainly running Claude Code within Claude Desktop, and the only way to disable its audio is to disable all audio on the computer.

Request

  1. Add a toggle in Settings to disable app sound effects. Separate toggles for completion and dictation sounds would be better, but a single master switch would resolve this.
  2. Independently of that toggle, fix the repeating behavior. An alert should play once per event, not loop.

Prior reports

#34170 (dictation sound, marked stale)
#59970 (dictation sound, reopened after #34170 was closed)
#36063 (completion chime, closed as invalid because it was filed in the Claude Code repo, but there is no Claude Desktop category, so that is unfair!)

The completion chime report was closed for being in the wrong repo rather than addressed. If there is a correct venue for Claude Desktop app issues, please point users there; however, none can be found.

Environment

macOS, Apple Silicon
Claude Desktop app

Proposed Solution

  1. Add a toggle in Settings to disable app sound effects. Separate toggles for completion and dictation sounds would be better, but a single master switch would resolve this.
  2. Independently of that toggle, fix the repeating behavior. An alert should play once per event, not loop.
