Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
In the macOS desktop app, the context window usage indicator (the small pie chart in the bottom-right of each session) shows the same value for every session, regardless of each session's actual context usage.
- Sessions with very different amounts of context all display an identical pie chart.
- Even the new-session home screen (before any conversation starts) shows the same indicator, at more than 50% used.
Restarting the app does not change anything, and the app is on the latest version.
What Should Happen?
Each session's indicator should reflect that session's own context usage, and a brand-new session should show (near) zero usage.
Error Messages/Logs
Steps to Reproduce
- Open the Claude desktop app on macOS
- Open multiple sessions with clearly different context usage (e.g., one fresh session and one long session)
- Compare the context usage pie chart in the bottom-right of each session
- Also check the new-session home screen: it already shows more than 50% used despite having no conversation yet
All sessions (including a brand-new one) show the same value.

Additional Information
- Environment: Claude desktop app for macOS, version 1.40609.0, on macOS 14.4 (Darwin 23.4.0). "Terminal/Shell" and "Platform" are set to Other because this happens in the desktop app UI (Claude subscription / Max plan), not in a terminal.
- Possibly related display issues: #66261 (indicator shows 94% while breakdown sums to ~17%), #51154 (random context usage at session start).
- I can attach screenshots on request: multiple sessions plus the new-session home screen all showing the identical >50% pie chart.
