[FEATURE] Claude 3P conversation history and memory portability is unclear and creates a poor migration experience
Feedback
I'm using Claude 3P in an enterprise environment and recently discovered that important conversation context, memories, and workspace state appear to be tied to the local machine rather than being transparently available across devices.
For advanced users who maintain Git repositories, backup strategies, and custom workflows, this may be manageable. For typical users, however, this creates a surprising and potentially frustrating experience.
A user who replaces a laptop, moves to a VM, experiences a hardware failure, or begins using a second workstation may reasonably expect their AI assistant's history, learned context, memories, and project state to follow them. Instead, they can be left with the impression that years of conversations, problem solving history, and accumulated context have disappeared.
My feedback is not necessarily that everything must be stored server side. Rather, the product should provide one or more of the following:
Clear documentation describing exactly what data is stored locally versus remotely.
A supported backup and restore process for conversations, memories, and workspace state.
A migration wizard for moving Claude 3P data to a new device.
An optional cloud synced experience for users who want seamless continuity across devices.
User facing warnings when important conversation data exists only on the local system.
AI assistants increasingly function as knowledge management tools. As reliance on them grows, conversation history and accumulated context become valuable user data. Losing that continuity during a device replacement feels less like losing chat history and more like losing part of a personal knowledge base.
Today the behavior is surprising enough that many users will only discover it after a migration event, which is the worst possible time to learn about it.
I look forward to improvements in this area.
