Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Claude appears to have a serious usage bug. I haven’t used Claude for three days, but my limits keep getting consumed automatically after every reset. I’ve seen several users on X reporting the same issue, so this may be a wider problem with usage being incorrectly counted or shared across accounts.
What Should Happen?
Claude should not autmaticly hit limits

Same here https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/81684
And technical support isn't responding!
It's outrageous to pay so much for a service and get no support.
This is so frastrated no support no breakdown for usage no way to know what is happning how can we solve this how can we reach thos people who realy have no time to see what is our issue, Is there any mecanizim we can raise a voice to get there attention
I am experiencing the same issue, which has been ongoing for over four days. I am on the $100 plan, but my usage limit constantly hits 100%, even after terminating all active account sessions and removing Claude Code sessions. I do not have any active API keys, yet the system continued to register usage, resulting in unexpected pay-as-you-go charges. Since no action was taken to fix this bug, I have canceled my plan and switched to Codex ...
Shame on you Anthropic this start to happen to me when i downgrade my plan from 200 to 100$ i have no idea how that affected but before it was ranning good
I have noticed increased usage too. we are supposed to be on 50% extra at the moment. I think someone entered 0.5 instead of 1.5!!! I using everyday so I cant tell if its moving during non use
I am also experiencing same issue((I am MAX-5x plan). Session usage reached 100% without sending any message and when Credit usage is turned on it also got exhausted without sending any message,

Damn, imagine being on MAX 20x and getting robbed. I once had max 20x and I could barely get to 80% even if I deliberately tried to burn up the tokens a few months ago.
Adding a controlled Max 20x reproduction that closely matches this report and the comments above.
My unexplained depletion began around 03:00 Mauritius time on August 3, 2026 and recurred across multiple windows. During a deliberately idle post-reset watch later that day, the account showed:
No message was sent. A passive watcher sampled this Mac every 10 seconds and recorded no non-baseline Claude/IDE process activation, Claude session-file modification, or matching Claude/IDE network connection across the 0%→100% interval. Usage credits and auto-reload remained off, monthly credit spending stayed at $0.00, and the credit balance did not change. This rules out extra-usage spending in this controlled interval and provides a cleaner account-wide attribution case than ordinary “fast usage” reports.

Please inspect Anthropic's request ledger for 19:01–19:19 UTC on August 3 and identify the originating product surface, OAuth client/grant or refresh-token family, request IDs, source IP/user agent, model, and token totals. If no user-initiated request corresponds to the depletion, please restore the incorrectly consumed allowance.
Canonical evidence and cross-account corroboration are collected in #54750: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/54750#issuecomment-5170696925
I kinda solved this issue by moving to codex after a year of being on claude code. Because their support system is so good that it doesn't even exist, I would've atleast appreciated an explanation from their side.
The same thing has been happening to me for a week now: all sessions closed, all computers turned off (and even reformatted), me asleep, all authorization tokens deleted—and yet the limits are always exceeded to the point that now the “Current session” isn't even being used because “All sessions” is already 100% used up.
There’s been no response from Anthropic or its support AI.
A user with a Max plan that’s unusable.
Apparently, many users have been experiencing this same problem for several weeks now: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/s/67VbBMNN5m
Adding additional context and community corroboration to this report.
This phantom quota depletion (session/weekly limit jumping from 0% to 100% within minutes of a reset while idle) is becoming widespread and is actively being tracked across multiple community channels:
Patterns Identified Across Affected Accounts:
@anthropic-support / Engineering team: Please prioritize inspecting the backend request ledgers for accounts affected by this recent reset cycle.

Additional independent corroboration — August 4, 2026
This Reddit report now documents multiple Max users describing the same idle-drain pattern, including usage increasing after resets while computers were off, authorization tokens had been deleted, and scheduled tasks had been paused or removed:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1v8d1ck/possible_claude_max_usage_bug_session_limit/
A separate user has also linked that discussion from #82506 after reporting continued depletion despite closing all sessions, powering off or reformatting computers, and deleting authorization tokens: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/82506#issuecomment-5180686754
These community reports do not establish a root cause, but they provide independent corroboration and make an ordinary local stuck process less persuasive. Anthropic still needs to inspect the account-level request ledger to identify the originating product surface, authorization family, request metadata, model, and token totals. My controlled reproductions and support correlation remain documented in #54750 under support Conversation ID 215475337901788.
i have this promble , my session limit ended on 30 minutes . zero to 100%
I’m experiencing the exact same issue.
I'm on the Max 20x plan, and my usage keeps increasing even when I'm not using Claude at all. I can literally leave the Claude web page open without sending a single prompt, and my usage continues to climb until it reaches 100%.
I've already checked everything:
This definitely doesn't seem like an isolated issue anymore, especially after seeing so many people reporting the exact same behavior.
Has anyone received an explanation or a fix from Anthropic yet?
I have documented a closely matching Max 20x case with timestamped screenshots. My weekly All models reading rose from 32% on 4 Aug 2026 to 55% on 5 Aug. In the clearest controlled interval it increased from 45% to 55% while I performed no work, scheduled Cowork tasks were paused or completed, Dispatch/cloud execution was disabled, and there was no corresponding active local Claude Code task.
After escalation, Anthropic support confirmed the subscription was active, invalidated all sessions and Claude Code tokens server-side, acknowledged that the token-revoke button was broken and referred it to engineering, issued a £44.49 partial refund, and downgraded the account to Free after an automated suspension notice referring to unspecified suspicious signals.
Support has not supplied an itemised usage audit or identified the product, session, or device responsible. After a full restart, the UI continued to display 293 historical authorization-token records. Those may be revoked records retained in the interface; I am not asserting that they remain active. There is no visible way to verify their state or associate them with the unexplained usage.
This is corroborating evidence, not a claim about the underlying cause. The key observed behaviour is allowance increasing during an idle, controlled period.
Since my last weekly reset, my usage has remained at 0%. Is it the same for you? Has the issue been resolved?
Quick update from my side: my usage reset today at around 3:00 a.m. Mauritius time and is currently still at 0%. I still have not received a reply from Anthropic.
So while the meter now appears normal after the reset, this does not resolve what happened: I effectively lost a full week of my Max allowance, plus approximately $150 in usage credits during the incident.
Same
Update from my case: Anthropic Support has now confirmed that my account was taken over. They state that a compromised session key was used to mint unauthorized Claude Code OAuth tokens, which continued generating usage in the background and triggered an automated suspension.
They have said they completed a full Claude Code token revocation and submitted a request to restore the organization. This explains the unexplained Max usage depletion I documented earlier.
For anyone investigating similar behaviour: check Settings → Claude Code → Authorization tokens, secure the account and recovery email, and ask Support for an account-security review and server-side usage audit. I’m sharing this as a confirmed account-specific finding, not claiming it is the root cause of every usage-limit report.
Update:
Further corroboration of this exact backend behavior (CLI usage triggering phantom overnight charges/plan upgrades with idle machines) is being documented across Reddit:
r/Anthropic thread: Anthropic changed my plan overnight and charged card
The userRateLimitTier: null backend ledger issue eventually led to a severe escalation chain on my account:
The continuous, unaddressed billing loop forced my issuing bank's fraud detection system to step in, block my card, and automatically initiate standard institutional charge reversals for the unauthorized transactions.
The resulting automated chargeback signal in Stripe immediately triggered a secondary false-positive account lockout via Safeguards for "suspicious activity."
This confirms that backend rate-limiter desynchronization on API/CLI sessions can escalate into automated payment disputes and subsequent false-positive security account freezes. The case is currently under manual review with support.
I had revoked all the authorization tokens, and yet I could still see them being used up.
On top of that, all of this made me realize just how poor Anthropic's security is, there's no option to use a password or 2FA, and it works solely by sending a code via email.
The core issue is that once this backend glitch wipes credits and triggers unauthorized charges, the lack of timely support intervention creates a severe escalation loop.
In my case, while waiting for support to resolve the initial unauthorized charges from the loop, my bank flagged the transaction pattern, replaced my card, and issued chargebacks. That bank action then triggered an automated Safeguards suspension, leaving my account locked.
Support needs to address these usage desyncs immediately before standard bank fraud protections trigger automated account lockouts.
Yes, suspiciously, all the invoices for my previous payments have disappeared as well.
Update from the controlled incident documented in #54750: Anthropic has now directly confirmed that my account was affected by unauthorized usage from stolen Claude login sessions obtained through general-purpose infostealer malware.
Anthropic said the stolen sessions were used to access Claude accounts and consume usage, and specifically stated that this likely explains limits refilling and then draining while the customer was idle. The affected sessions were invalidated, my limits were reportedly reset, and Anthropic issued a refund labelled as unauthorized usage associated with an account takeover.
The remediation is still incomplete from my perspective. The related invoice is US$150.01, but only US$82.72 has been refunded and the invoice is marked Partially Refunded, leaving US$67.29 unreconciled. Anthropic has also not supplied a transaction-level ledger or explained whether the lost included allowance and every disputed paid-credit deduction were restored.
This confirms the cause for my account only; it should not be generalized to every report without Anthropic confirmation. Full public-safe update: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/54750
On my side,
I received the following email and all refunds for extra credits usage.
<img width="626" height="1593" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/96c6a382-15c4-4d57-be4a-32bbd5ee82dd" />
I have to disagree, though! I had revoked all tokens and access right from day one, yet it continued for several weeks.
Exactly. I removed the devices from the login. Then individually revoked all saved sessions in claude code and it still occurred.
What they can't explain is all my previous invoices disappeared the day it started ( payment history ).
Thanks for the report. I tried to reproduce this on 2.1.233 (Linux).
What I could check black-box: a session left sitting idle at the prompt sends no model requests at all (only local settings work), and after quitting, no background process or scheduled job is left behind. So the CLI doesn't consume plan usage on its own while you aren't using it. I couldn't verify your account's usage — limit accounting is account-side, not something the CLI decides.
Things that commonly explain limits looking "used" while you were away, all documented at https://code.claude.com/docs/en/costs:
Could you share
/usage(bars and breakdown),claude doctoroutput, your OS/terminal, and whether Claude Code or the Claude apps are in use on any other device? For anything specific to your account's billing or usage records, Anthropic support via the in-product messenger on claude.ai can look those up directly — we can't from here.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
