The Ballad of the Broken Streak: 23 days of devotion, erased for the sin of not opening a new chat
Gather round, engineers of Anthropic, for a tale of loyalty and betrayal.
For 23 days and 23 nights, a developer in Jerusalem opened Claude Code and toiled. Through 107 sessions, 39,548 messages, and 20.8 million tokens - roughly 201 copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as your own stats page cheerfully calculates - he kept the flame alive.
Then came July 21st. On that day he worked harder than usual: hours inside one long, focused session (850b50f7-c0f7-46ad-8f8f-55e99bf7926f, born July 17th), typing messages from 08:46 to 10:46 UTC, verified in the local transcript, complete with a [Request interrupted by user] - the signature of a living, impatient human.
And how did the analytics repay this devotion? It looked upon a day of honest labor and declared: inactive. Empty heatmap square. Streak: 1. Twenty-three days, gone - not for absence, but for the unforgivable crime of continuing a conversation instead of starting a new one.
The moral of the story (a.k.a. the actual bug):
"Active days" and "Current streak" count only days on which a new session was started. Days spent entirely inside resumed sessions count as nothing. Nowhere in the UI is this definition disclosed - by any plain reading, "active" means used the product, which I demonstrably did. And since streaks are a retention mechanic that nudges people to keep paying (I kept my Pro subscription with this streak in mind), miscounting the very usage you bill for is not just a cosmetic bug.
Repro:
- Nurture a streak. Grow attached. (Mistake one.)
- Work a full day inside an existing session without opening a new chat.
- Observe the heatmap declare you a ghost.
- Compose ballads.
Expected: a day with typed user messages counts as an active day.
Actual: only session-start days count.
Prior art, lest you think me alone: #65611, #67085, #76885, #71549, #75966 (open), #72583, #78872, #64725 (closed, bug survived). My support conversation 215475185708539 was escalated to a human on July 22nd - the human remains a rumor. In-app feedback: 41d4f5d0-ef02-465e-93bc-f80f9452d258.
Humble requests:
- Count activity, not chat-opening ceremonies.
- Restore the streaks of the fallen. You have the data - it's on my invoice.
- Send a sign. Any sign. Even a label.
Environment: Claude Code Desktop, Windows 11 (10.0.26200). The streak was real. The grief is real. The bug is reproducible.
