[BUG] Auto-compaction erased the past text on terminal

Resolved 💬 3 comments Opened Dec 20, 2025 by prateek-aryabhatta Closed Dec 23, 2025

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

The auto-compaction starts suddenly and it essentially removes what was written on the terminal. I was trying to read and copy some content which was displayed on the screen. It was erased while i was still copying and now I lost that information.

What Should Happen?

Auto-compaction should occupy only one line and perhaps provide an option to see details.
It should not erase what was displayed on the terminal.
The auto-compaction details are of no use to the user.

Error Messages/Logs

none

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Ask Claude Code to do some code analysis so that it displays some details on the screen/terminal.
  2. Reach to a point where auto-compaction is necessary and let it start.
  3. Try to copy any detail that was displayed before.

Observation

You will find that you cannot get to old content even after auto-compaction is complete. scrolling/page-up etc are not helpful either. You cannot go back to what was displayed earlier.
