Claude in Chrome extension: navigation blocked with "Navigation to this domain is not allowed" for new domains
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
When trying to use the Claude in Chrome extension to navigate to or interact with new domains (not previously used in the session), I consistently get the error "Navigation to this domain is not allowed" or "Permission denied for this action on this domain" — even after:
- Setting Chrome's extension Site Access to include the specific domain
- Adding the domain via the extension's own "approved sites" settings
- Fully uninstalling and reinstalling the extension
- Updating the Claude desktop app to the latest version
- Restarting the browser and the app multiple times
One domain (used earlier in the same conversation/session) continued to work perfectly the entire time with no issues. Two other domains, added later in the same session, have never worked despite identical troubleshooting steps.
This makes it impossible to use the Chrome extension for any domain beyond the first one approved per session.
What Should Happen?
Claude should be able to navigate to and interact with any domain via the Claude in Chrome extension after the user has approved site access for it, consistent with how it worked for the first domain used in the session.
Error Messages/Logs
Navigation to this domain is not allowed
Permission denied for this action on this domain
Permission denied for reading page content on this domain
Steps to Reproduce
- In an active Claude conversation, use the Claude in Chrome extension to navigate to and interact with a website (Domain A) - works fine.
- Later in the same conversation/session, try to navigate to a different, previously-unused domain (Domain B) via the same extension tools.
- Observe: navigation/action calls immediately fail with "Navigation to this domain is not allowed" or "Permission denied for this action on this domain" for Domain B, while Domain A continues to work.
- Attempted fixes that did NOT resolve it: setting Chrome extension Site Access to include Domain B specifically, adding Domain B via the extension's own "Your approved sites" list, fully uninstalling/reinstalling the extension, updating the Claude desktop app, restarting Chrome and the app multiple times.
- This reproduced identically with two separate new domains added later in the same session.
