I can add this: It is NOT environmental, and not account specific. I have tried multiple devices, uninstalled, reinstalled, two different pro accounts. I get it constantly. My theory is its a an undisclosed rate limit.

I got it multiple times yesterday. The logout and login worked twice, on both accounts. Then first one, then the other stopped working with the 401, and are now both getting the error consistently. I was doing a heavy workload yesterday. This is deliberate.

SOLUTION! The solution is to downgrade to 1.0.81. Fixed immediately and permanently. I verified by going back to 1.0.82/3, and the problem returned.

Took me half a day to find the solution. Sharing so others dont have to.

Sometimes logging out and in will work, but in my two pro plans eventually that didn't either.

Downgrade works like a charm.

Downgrading to 1.0.81 also worked for me. I was on 1.0.83 when I ran into this same error

I'm getting this right now on the regular $20 plan, how can you downgrade if the app upgrades automatically?

  1. Disable Auto-Updates via /config
  2. Run npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@1.0.81
  3. Enjoy

I also run into this issue with the Max plan. The downgrade to 1.0.81 helped directly. Previous try to /logout and /login was not a solution. I was updated to 1.0.83 automatically.

Getting this error on the Max plan. I tried logging in and out and restarting claude code.

  ⎿ API Error: 401 {"type":"error","error":{"type":"authentication_error","message":"OAuth authentication
     is currently not supported."}}

Update: Closing the iterm window and releaching claude in a new window resolved it

swoopsus · 11 months ago

That works a few times, but then stops working. Downgrading to 0.81 fixed it permanently for me.

quintela · 11 months ago

same here.

IAmShaarawy · 11 months ago

just downgraded to 1.0.81 and it works fine.

npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@1.0.81
derspotter · 11 months ago

the issue persists!

swoopsus · 11 months ago

Did you check you dont have more than one location? Check claude --version. It needs to be 0.81 or lower.

derspotter · 11 months ago

it works when i downgrade, but it is still a bug. what do you mean by more than one location?

swoopsus · 11 months ago

This bug ahem gets worse. Claude code is now choosing to ignore claude config set autoUpdates false --global and force you to upgrade. It does this every time I hit the rate limit, and I have to downgrade again to get back to work.

Its a curiously consistent sort of bug, that escalates on a fixed set of rules, each time making harder to keep working after you hit the rate limit:

  1. Hit rate limit: Logout and back in fixes it. Twice.
  2. Third time? That stops working no matter what you do.
  3. After that, you have to downgrade to 1.0.81 to get back to work.
  4. GREAT, that works a few times, BUT,
  5. THEN it starts ignoring your no auto update rule, and updates you to the latest versions (82, 83, and now 84), with the BUG
  6. NOW you have to downgrade every time you hit the limit.

Curiouser and curiouser...all that escalation in 5 days.

Please fix it ASAP. Why should people buy "Max" plan and struggle?

strangeprocess · 11 months ago

Reporting the same experience/bug over the last two days.

Logging out/closing terminal, and logging back in is indeed only a temporary fix (tested on both Mac + PC/Windows).

I also downgraded to 1.0.81 and so far no issues.

paulbettner · 11 months ago

Same here.

derspotter · 11 months ago

I just updated to 1.0.85 and the issue is NOT fixed. Are you kidding me? Without downgrading claude code has now been unusable for nearly a week on the max plan. This is absolutely unacceptable. plan cancelled.

josepforest · 10 months ago

Just learned the downgrade to 1.0.81. Luckily I just applied to the Pro plan but, still this is unacceptable. What's more.. After days trying to speak to a human agent... radio silence. Is anybody at Anthropic reading this forum ?? How, on earth, is the bug still present ??!??! isn't there enough noise ??

derspotter · 10 months ago

Apparently you can just /exit and and start Claude again and it should be fixed.
