Problem Statement

The Group by feature in the Claude Code desktop app is too buried and has the wrong defaults.

I've been using Claude Code for months without realizing that Groups even existed. Then, when I realized they existed, the UX was bad because I couldn't create a new session in my Group. I had to create it and then move the new session into the group with the right click menu (not even drag and drop works).

Then it was annoying that I couldn't sort them. Finally, I just saw that I can sort them, and that when sorting by Project (which is what I want), now there is a + button on the Group, also what I want!

I feel like this should be the default. This is how Codex operates by default as well, FWIW. I suspect most people are using Claude Code without taking advantage of Groups because the UX is too hidden.

Proposed Solution

  • Make Group by Project the default.
  • Auto-create a Group for each Session that is created from the New session button if it uses a new project folder
