[BUG] Claude Pro users are not currently able to use Opus in Claude Code
- Platform (select one):
- Anthropic API
- AWS Bedrock
- Google Vertex AI
- Other:
- Claude CLI version: 1.0.81 (Claude Code)
- Operating System: Linux 6.6.87.2-microsoft-standard-WSL2
- Terminal: WSL2
Bug Description
Claude Pro users receive an error when attempting to use Opus model despite official documentation stating it should be available.
Steps to Reproduce
- Log in as a Claude Pro user
- Run /model Opus or /model Opus 4.1 command in Claude Code
- Observe error message
Expected Behavior
Claude Pro users should be able to access Opus 4.1 as stated on the official Anthropic website at https://www.anthropic.com/claude/opus which explicitly lists "available on
Claude for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users" and mentions availability "in Claude Code".
Actual Behavior
Error message: "Invalid model. Claude Pro users are not currently able to use Opus in Claude Code. The current model is now Sonnet."
Additional Context
There appears to be a discrepancy between the published capabilities on the Anthropic website and the actual implementation in Claude Code. The error message specifically
mentions Pro users cannot access Opus, which contradicts the official documentation.

What happened here today? No Claude Opus 4.1 in Claude Code for ALL Pro-Plan Users?!? It was such a great time with Opus 4.1, but Claude Code only with Sonnet feels soooo bad,

really bad.
Works normally for me for v1.0.81, on MacOS.
@coygeek: so you have the MAX-Subscription?
Yes, Max $200/mo plan.
@coygeek: ok, that explains why it works for you: until today I could work with Claude 4.1 in v1.0.81 and PRO-Subscription without problems (and less tokens of course) ... until today! Did Anthropic communicate this "deep cut" for PRO-Users. Sonnet makes NO fun, compared with Opus 4.1.

... just worked :-) ...hoping, that Anthropic will open Opus 4.1 for us Pro-Subscribers in Claude Code again soon, of course.
Happy Coding :-)

Any news from anthropic? I too bought a Pro subscription for access to Opus 4.1 in claude code, which should be available as per the official docs, only to discover that too.
If that is intentional, that is just plain wrong customer practises.
Not yet... waiting for Claude Opus 4.1 in Pro-Plan, too...
I bought Max x20 and I'am registered as Pro user ????
pro +, no access to opus 4.1 except for during some hours during the day. So my guess is when their enterprise / powerusers aren't hogging it.
This just happened to me. To fix, I used the /upgrade command on the cli which opened a web page to modify my subscription -- I made no changes because I'm already Max, but the act of doing that meant I could close the web page and the cli was waiting for me to "finish" the change where I could hit Enter on the cli. That re-read the account setup and walked me through re-authorize, and recognized me as Max again. At that point I could use /model to switch back to Opus.
@ktwbc Thank you, that fixed my issue 👍🏻
@ktwbc, thank you, this fixed for me too. This should be the top comment on this page.
@sachitsac It should not. This issue is specifically about Claude Pro users. Not Max. It just got sidetracked.
@YPares , my bad, you are right. It did resolve a problem for me but this fix was not for the original problem posted. Thanks for the correction
This seems to be kind of on/off for me? Yesterday I was using Opus, today I get the error OP reported when using Opus.
yes its the same for me now, was just using opus 4.1 and now suddenly i am not being able to
I have a similar issue where Opus is not available but Sonnet works just fine in Claude code (and that's the only thing that changes to make this work or not work). The error I get is slightly different from OP though:
I think Antrophic withdrew Opus for Pro users, I feel scammed. I paid full year upfront to use it and now it was taken from me, just like that.
From page:
Availability and pricing
For business users and consumers who want to collaborate with our most powerful model on complex tasks, Claude Opus 4.1 is available on Claude for Max, Team, and Enterprise users.
No mention of Pro users anymore...
Good News: Sonnet 4.5 is here! 🎉
Finally! No more Sonnet 4 limitations in the CLI - Sonnet 4.5 is now the new default model, and it's available for Pro users by DEFAULT in the CLI, not just Max users. Excited to see how powerful and capable this new model will be compared to previous versions.
The upgrade means better performance and capabilities right in the command line interface, making it more accessible to a broader user base. Looking forward to testing its enhanced reasoning and coding capabilities! 🚀
Just let Claude Code CLI update and get Sonnet 4.5 from the start... the same in the WEB Version.

i feared that as well. And the lack of customer support from anthropic is just upright bullshit. They are real scummy in that sense. Also like you pointed out, without news, just silently removing that it no longer includes Pro user? Wtf is that? Are they now a Scamcall Center?

Well, what about Opus 4.5? I subscribed to Pro just because of this:

Update:
Here's what the support bot said to me:
Has anyone tried that?
@proflivio It just changed about 2 weeks ago :) now Opus is fully included in Claude Code with the Pro Plan
@YPares That sounds great, but how can I make it work? I still get the same notice that OP posted. Do I need to dig in configs, or use some magick trick, like the /upgrade but not really upgrade thing? :)
Update:
Couldn't update claude-code for some reason, removed it, installed the latest version, works now! Thanks for the info.
