[v2.1.118] /usage redesign removed monthly usage visibility — this contradicts the transparency commitment

What changed

In v2.1.118 (April 23, 2026), /usage was redesigned. The previous
display showed monthly usage percentage and time to quota
replenish
— the two numbers a paying customer actually needs to
manage their relationship with this product.

Both were removed. Replaced with a 5-hour and 7-day rolling-window
dashboard that does not answer the question "how much of what I'm
paying for have I consumed this month."

Why this is a problem

This isn't a UI refresh. It's a deliberate transfer of visibility
away from the customer and toward the vendor. Anthropic still
has every byte of telemetry on my usage. I, as the paying customer,
no longer have a way to see, in the tool I'm using, what I've spent.

The "workaround" — open a browser tab, log into the Console at
platform.claude.com/usage — is not acceptable. The whole point of
in-CLI usage tracking was that it surfaced the number where the
work happens. Pushing it to a separate website, behind a separate
login, is friction by design.

The mission-statement contradiction

Anthropic's public posture emphasizes transparency, honesty, and
building AI that users can trust. Removing user-facing cost
transparency from the tool — while the vendor retains full
visibility — directly undermines that posture. You cannot claim
transparency as a value while making your customers' own usage
opaque to them.

What I want

  1. Restore monthly usage percentage and time-to-replenish in

/usage, or expose them via:

  • a CLI flag (claude --usage --monthly)
  • a statusline variable
  • an env var that opts into the legacy display
  1. Document the change in the changelog with the actual

reasoning, not just the version bump line.

  1. Acknowledge that pulling a customer-facing metric without

notice or substitute was a regression, not an improvement.

Context

I am a paying Max subscriber ($200/month). I would not have
renewed at this tier if I'd known monthly usage visibility was
going to be silently revoked. The trust cost of this change is
larger than whatever engineering simplification motivated it.

This needs to be reverted or replaced with an equivalent in-CLI
view. The Console URL is not an answer.

Shame.

You charge $200 a month and you hide the meter. You write
"transparency" into your mission and then quietly delete the one
display that gave it to your customers. There is no reading of
this that flatters you.

I trusted this company. I don't anymore.
