[Bug] Claude Code self-update consumes excessive tokens (7% of 5-hour budget on single operation)

Bug Description
Simple update of Claude Code by Claude Code in Claude Desktop ate 7% of 5-hour budget, 3% of weekly, on Max 20x. Starting fresh session this morning as I wanted to make sure I picked up any fix for the token race conditions that stopped my work yesterday right after you did the Usage reset for everyone (fast using of tokens and slow progress on simple tasks may have started hours before the reset). The only action I took at that time was to ask CC to update itself and I have no other usage of the tokens elsewhere. So the 7% is a real direct data point. I am moving to Codex for now even though I haven't used Codex in over a year, maybe longer. I cannot lose another day of coding. I really hope this gets sorted out quickly and you let everyone know as I am not the only one that is moving reluctantly. When I first noticed this, I posted on X as a reply to the reset explanation post. Boris Cherny responded to me twice so I know this has visibility. My X handle is @armstrong_k. I will elaborate: I do not want to use OpenAI, but my preferences are overruled by need and data. I am sending this feedback in a terminal as you don’t support /usage and /feedback in Claude Desktop Code for some reason yet there were Claude Code team X posts suggesting to move coding work to Desktop so I have been using it for a week or so.
