Bug Description
Claude Code completely ignores my Max 20x subscription and ONLY routes API calls through Extra Usage.
Evidence
/usageshows my subscription buckets barely touched (session ~12%, weekly ~23%)- Extra Usage is actively burning ($5.95+ and counting)
- When I disable Extra Usage -> immediate API error 400
- There is NO fallback to my subscription - Claude Code simply refuses to work
Expected Behavior
Per Boris Cherny's announcement, Max subscribers should get Opus included in their subscription. Extra Usage should be optional overflow, NOT the only working path.
Actual Behavior
100% of API calls route to Extra Usage. My $200/month subscription is completely bypassed. I am being double-charged.
Impact
You are going to lose customers. I pay $200/month for Max 20x and I CANNOT use Claude Code without enabling Extra Usage and paying MORE money on top. This is unacceptable.
Steps to Reproduce
- Be a Max 20x subscriber
- Disable Extra Usage in settings
- Try to use Claude Code
- Get API error 400 immediately
Fix this. Route Max subscribers through their subscription buckets like you promised.

My credentials.json CONFIRMS I am correctly authenticated as Max 20x:
The authentication is correct. Anthropic's backend is ignoring it and routing ALL requests to extra-usage anyway.
No ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set - this is purely OAuth through claude.ai.
This is a critical bug in your billing/rate-limiting system. My 00/month subscription is being completely bypassed.

I have escalated to human support but this is URGENT. I am a paying Max 20x customer (00/month) and Claude Code is UNUSABLE without burning extra-usage credits on top of my subscription.

I've been a Claude Pro/Max user because I genuinely like the model quality, but the current usage limits are becoming difficult to justify.
My 5-hour limit can disappear after working on only a handful of news articles. Long form writing, rewriting, translation, and iterative editing consume usage far faster than expected. In some cases, a small number of articles can exhaust an entire session window or a significant portion of the weekly allowance.
The biggest issue isn't that limits exist it's the lack of transparency. As a paying customer ($240), I need to understand how usage is being measured and why similar workloads can produce very different usage consumption.
Many users are reporting the same experience: limits being reached much faster than before, especially during coding, writing, and agent based workflows. There have even been public complaints, bug reports, and discussions regarding rapid limit depletion and unclear quota tracking.
Please provide:
The model is excellent, but the current limit system makes it difficult to rely on Claude for professional longterm workloads.
