Feature Request: Support `/buddy` companion display in Claude Code Desktop app

Resolved 💬 4 comments Opened Apr 2, 2026 by ivytears Closed Apr 9, 2026

Summary

/buddy works perfectly in the terminal CLI — hatching animation, pet card, and companion reactions all render correctly. However, in the Claude Code Desktop app (Mac), the command runs silently with no output at all. No error, no hatching animation, no pet card.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Claude Code Desktop app (Mac)
  2. Start a new session
  3. Type /buddy
  4. Nothing renders — just session initialization and hooks

Expected Behavior

The buddy hatching animation and pet card should display in the Desktop app, same as in the terminal CLI.

Actual Behavior

Command executes silently. No visual output. The buddy only works in terminal.

Additional Requests

  • Support /buddy rendering in the Desktop app (Mac & Windows)
  • Consider customizable buddy display options (size, position, always-visible toggle)
  • Desktop app users should be able to enjoy their coding companion too!

Environment

  • Claude Code version: 2.1.90
  • Platform: macOS (Darwin 24.6.0)
  • Subscription: Max

Screenshots

Terminal CLI (works ✅)

The buddy renders correctly with ASCII art, stats, and reactions.

Desktop App (doesn't work ❌)

/buddy runs but nothing appears — only session initialization is shown.
