Claud Code OAuth Screen for Authenticating Claude Code Is Unresponsive after clicking "Authorize"

When I run claude code for the first time:

1. it asks me to authenticate and I select that I have a subscription.
2. It then opens the web browser with an authorization screen, I select "Authorize".
3. And nothing happens. "it just keeps spinning". Claud code is still waiting with the prompt "Paste code here if prompted >"
