[BUG] Token burn is increasingly high since Opus 4.6
Resolved 💬 4 comments Opened Feb 8, 2026 by mrmrcode Closed Mar 9, 2026
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Struggling to understand pricing, the /cost command doesnt help.
The pace of token burn is 2-3x of what I was paying with Opus 4.5 and 5x since Opus 4.1
Even plan prompts seems to burn $5 per prompt, while it was $2-3 in Opus 4.5.
What Should Happen?
Token burn should stay consistent between models
Steps to Reproduce
- Launch Claude Code in any medium-sized repo (claude).
- Run a planning prompt (e.g., “Plan how to refactor this repo to improve build times.”).
- After the response completes, run /cost.
- Repeat steps 2–3 with 2–3 similar planning prompts.
- Observe that /cost is unclear and per-prompt cost is ~$5, significantly higher than Opus 4.1/4.5.
