[DOCS] Read tool PDF behavior missing pages parameter and large-PDF @ mention guidance

Documentation Type

Missing documentation (feature not documented)

Documentation Location

https://code.claude.com/docs/en/common-workflows

Section/Topic

"Reference files and directories"

Current Documentation

The docs currently say:

Use @ to quickly include files or directories without waiting for Claude to read them. This includes the full content of the file in the conversation.

What's Wrong or Missing?

Changelog v2.1.30 adds PDF-specific read behavior: a pages parameter for the Read tool and a change where large PDFs (over 10 pages) referenced with @ return lightweight references instead of full content. The "Reference files and directories" section does not mention either behavior, so users have no guidance on how to read PDFs by page or why a large PDF reference may not inline content.

Suggested Improvement

Add a short "Reading PDFs" note under "Reference files and directories" (or a nearby section) that:

  • Explains the Read tool now accepts a pages parameter for PDFs, and documents the page-range syntax and a small example.
  • Notes that @ references to large PDFs return a reference stub instead of full content, and that users should run Read with pages to retrieve specific pages.

Impact

Medium - Makes feature difficult to understand
