Good feature requests show you understand the tradeoffs. By proposing <code style="font-family: monospace; color: rgb(136, 192, 208); background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.1); padding: 2px 4px; border-radius: 3px; font-size: 0.9em; word-break: break-word;">"auto"</code> as default, you're signaling that you're not asking them to break existing workflows - just give power users an opt-out. This makes it more likely to be accepted.

Problem
When using Claude Code in VS Code/Cursor, any text selected in the editor is automatically included in every message's context. While this is useful for "explain this code" scenarios, it becomes problematic in longer sessions where:

You selected something earlier for a one-time question
You moved on to unrelated tasks
The selection persists across new conversation windows
You're now paying tokens for irrelevant context on every single message
Concrete Example
I selected a 267-line implementation plan file to ask Claude one question about it. Now:

Every new conversation includes those 267 lines (~1,900 tokens)
The only way to stop this is to manually click the selection indicator each time I open a new chat window
Or close the file entirely, which I may need open for reference
Over a 20-message session, that's ~38,000 wasted tokens on context I only needed once.

Current Behavior
Scenario What Happens
Text selected in editor Always sent to Claude
New conversation window Selection still included
Toggle visibility Resets per-conversation (not persistent)
Desired Behavior
A setting to globally disable automatic selection inclusion, so users can opt-in to sharing selections via explicit @-mentions instead.

This is not a bug.
The original feature request was automatically closed so that was not a normal decision, please review this. This would save a lot of context window, would make claude code much more context conscious.

ldmtwo · 4 months ago

This feature is particularly harmful because if I have two terminals open running Claude, the two will mix and match creating hallucinations and garbage quality. It is really concerning when I'm in two different file directories or working on two different features in parallel and now each thinks that I'm providing information about the other, meaning that I cannot multitask because Claude is retarded. This feature incentivizes using different approaches that harm the Claude experience or moving away from Claude entirely because it is tightly coupled with the IDE. I do not need most features from the IDE with Claude. If I wanted that I would use copilot instead. The only feature that I want from the IDE connected to Claude is referencing files that I can drag or copy into the terminal, but doing so intentionally and not automatically.

+1 on this. Same experience on macOS with the latest Claude Code VSCode extension.

The visibility toggle resetting on every session switch is the most frustrating part. I explicitly mark the current file context as "not visible to Claude Code," but every time I switch to a different chat session, it reverts to visible. I have to re-disable it every single time.

I'd love the proposed "includeIdeSelection": "never" setting. I want full manual control over what context gets sent — automatic injection of unrelated files actively hurts my workflow by poisoning the conversation with irrelevant context.

sloikodavid · 4 months ago

same, would be nice to have it be sort of like the thinking toggle
for example claude.md context is definitely not needed for this task:

I can't tell you how this is the bane of our existence in our development team. Every hour one of us screams ARGH!!! because we forgot to click this darn thing off. I'd pay an extra month of max++ for just this enhancement

brian-archipelago · 4 months ago

+1 on this. I'd like a setting to default selection context to off. Having to toggle the eye icon every time is friction -- I rarely want my current selection sent as context.

MMEurope · 3 months ago

+1 incredibly annoying that it always automatically includes current file to context. I don't want that and unnecessarily bloats context.

valyagolev · 3 months ago

Can you please do it? I have a document with all the future plans/todos/etc, it confuses claude all the time.

insano70 · 3 months ago

Just added another 1000 line markdown file to a chat context that is entirely unrelated. This "feature" is so awful and unintuitive. Please remove it/fix it. It's ridiculous at this point.

martinvocast · 3 months ago

Surprising this is still not fixed.

dabrady · 3 months ago

It's incredibly annoying for me as well because closing the file doesn't remove it from the context of new messages—whatever file I happened to have in focus in my editor when the session was opened, it stays there forever unless I exclude it from every message I send. My workaround (when I care enough) is to create an empty file, open it in my editor, focus back on Claude to get it to take the place of whatever file was undesirably stuck to the session context, and then delete the empty file.

Like others have said, this could be useful if you are opening up a Claude session to ask questions about that file. But by no means is it the most common case for me. Most of the time I just have a bunch of tabs open, and it's unrelated to what I'm about to start doing.

xlurie · 2 months ago

For anyone finding this via search: a working community patch that defaults the chip to OFF (toggle stays functional) is documented at #24726 (comment). It covers both <ide_opened_file> and <ide_selection> since they share the same producer. Note: CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_ATTACHMENTS=1 does not help — wrong codepath.

chirayuk · 1 month ago

This is a correctness / context-integrity bug, not a cost optimization — please reconsider the area:cost framing.

Token spend is the least of it. Auto-appending whatever file or selection is
focused in the editor to every prompt corrupts the model's working context:

  • Context pollution → degraded output. A deliberately constructed prompt

gets silently diluted with unrelated code. Over a long session, that
irrelevant-context accumulation is exactly what pushes a model toward
confusion and hallucination.

  • Cross-session contamination. With 2–4 sessions open (a normal workflow),

a selection in one editor window leaks into an unrelated session — usually
unnoticed until it has already influenced output.

  • The mitigation-instead-of-a-flag tell. Claude Code already appends

"This may or may not be related to the current task" to the injected
context — i.e. the system knows the attachment is probably noise and
instructs the model to second-guess it, instead of simply not attaching it.
Shipping a guardrail prompt in place of a one-line toggle is backwards.

The fix is a boolean. includeIdeSelection: auto | never | ask (or even plain
on/off) is a few lines and fully backwards-compatible defaulting to auto.
Users who write careful prompts and explicitly @-mention what they want
should not have to disconnect the entire IDE integration to stop unsolicited
context injection.

Suggest relabeling off area:cost onto correctness / area:core — the cost
framing is likely part of why this has sat unassigned.

+1, incredibly annoying that it always automatically includes current file to context by default. It messes up the conversation a lot when a code/file not related to the current discussion is added by mistake. It happens to me a lot as I'm switching between multiple conversations in the same VScode window.

+1 This is frustrating. Please add settings to have the auto-context disabled by default and let the users turn it on by clicking the toggle, consolidating the choice per session.

+1 I don't use the IDE integration because of this

It is incredibly annoying that the current file is always included to context by default. It is very easy to forget to uninclude it when you are working in a long session and all the more so when switching between multiple conversations in the same VSCode instance.

PLEASE, Anthropic, this is SO ANNOYING!

Very stupid feature. Easy to forget to disable when you reload/exit VS Code many times per day.
After a Window Reload in VS Code, the extension went back to this stupid auto-include and it sent 25k lines of selected file by accident, which insta-killed my context (made it jump from 200k to 950k).

BTW, YOU (Anthropic) paid for those tokens - I'm on subscription anyway.

And then your harness doesn't even allow to rewind the conversation to release the bad context without rewinding the code too - who came up with not letting the user to go to a previous chat checkpoint without destroying the code results??:

Unfathomably stupid design:
Github Copilot allows you to disable this anti-feature for good, but your extension doesn't.
VERY subpar experience.

You have some great models, but your harness engineers need to do better.

Not a fan of having to disable the current file selection every time I open a new chat in the VSCode extension.
