Claude using Haiku for input processing

Recently, I've felt like Claude was having a hard time understanding me. Yesterday I noticed that I was using Haiku for input and Sonnet for output. I understand the attempt to keep costs down, but at what expense? I would rather pay to be able to use Sonnet both ways but I don't think it's an option.
