I confirm. We have to remind Claude Code constantly to read the CLAUDE.md file. Even when heavily insisting, he still doesn't do it half the time. It's very hard to work like that.

Is your CLAUDE.md in the same folder that you start claude in?

There was three option to choose from, where you want to store it. Right now its bo in the project folder for sure. I think this wont change anything.

We can confirm the that file is included with the context; the issue is more likely with instruction following or the quality of the CLAUDE.md prompt (note capitalization of filename.)

When testing to see if these files are picked up, we often include instructions like "speak like a pirate" just to see if they are being included at all.

Maybe you can make it visible when the file is attached or adding debugging because for me it's not working.

I am getting the same problem. I have several CLAUDE.md for different parts of the codebase (using golang with multiple apps), and getting the CLAUDE.md read is a challenge every time. Compacts also somehow manage to remove the references to the actual files used as a reference, and end up starting from scratch instead of from CLAUDE.md.

SigismondPhilippe · 1 year ago

Yes, compacting is sometimes poorly done, Claude forgets crucial things. Once I ended up with Claude making tons of changes, then in the end, victoriously declared "Perfect ! I've implemented your 4 lines of queries, blabla". Except that there were originally 10 lines of queries and the goal was to increase to 40.

Claude is not yet usable for medium sized projects. After just a few modules, it needs constant prompt engineering and reminders.

This is incredibly annoying. Very difficult to keep code style consistent when it's not reading CLAUDE.md

Hi, closing as the newest generation of models are now much better at following instructions in claude.md. Please open a new issue if you are still experiencing issues.
