[Web] Claude Code tab keeps GPU busy (dwm 40-76%) when shown on external monitor of hybrid-GPU laptop

Environment

  • Claude Code web (claude.ai/code) in Google Chrome
  • Windows 10 22H2 (19045), Dell G5 5500
  • Intel UHD (internal 1080p 144 Hz panel) + NVIDIA RTX 2060 (external monitor via HDMI, 60/144 Hz)

Problem

While a session is active, the Claude Code tab placed on the external (NVIDIA-driven) monitor
keeps dwm.exe at 40–76% 3D load across both GPUs; the RTX stays in P0 (~24 W).

Moving the tab to the internal display, minimizing it, or switching to another tab drops
dwm to ~5–10% and the RTX to P8 (~7 W). Other apps on the same monitor don't cause this.

Likely cause

The page repaints continuously (streaming text / spinners). Chrome renders on the iGPU,
so every frame is copied cross-adapter by DWM to the dGPU-driven display.

Expected

Near-idle GPU when the page has no visible changes; animations throttled/paused when idle.

Measured with

\GPU Engine(*)\Utilization Percentage perf counters and nvidia-smi (pstate, power.draw).
