[BUG] Desktop 2.37337.1: no way to sort sidebar groups alphabetically after the new sidebar (group order no longer follows group name)
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
After the desktop app moved to the new sidebar (sections, "Group by → Environment"), the groups in the Code tab sidebar are no longer ordered by name, and there is no setting that orders them by name.
Before the update, with "Group by → Project", group headers were always in alphabetical order (see #56060 and #81884, where this is described as fixed behavior regardless of "Sort by"). I relied on that order to find groups by name.
In the new sidebar:
- The "Sort by" submenu offers only "Last updated" and "Date created", plus "Descending" and "Ascending". There is no "Name" / "Alphabetically" entry.
- The sidebar settings still accept
sort_by: "alpha"for the Sessions section (setting it through the app's sidebar tools succeeds and reports"sort_by": "alpha"), but this only affects the order of sessions inside the section. The order of the groups does not change. - Custom sections have a fixed
orderand are not sorted by name either.
So there is no longer any way, in the menu or in the stored settings, to get groups ordered alphabetically.
What Should Happen?
Provide a way to order sidebar groups by name, for example:
- a "Sort groups by → Name" option, separate from the "Sort by" option that orders sessions within a group; or
- keep the previous behavior where group headers are ordered alphabetically.
It would also help if the menu said whether "Sort by" applies to groups or to the sessions inside each group (as also asked in #56060).
Error Messages/Logs
Steps to Reproduce
- Update the Claude desktop app to the version below; the Code tab shows the new sidebar.
- Open the sidebar menu (sliders icon) → "Sort by". Only "Last updated" and "Date created" are listed.
- Observe that the groups are not in alphabetical order.
- Set the Sessions section's sort to
alpha(via the app's sidebar tools). Sessions reorder, but the group order stays the same.
