Environment: Claude desktop app, Code tab, macOS 26 (Darwin 27.0.0), Claude Code 2.1.295.
What happens: Display math on its own line ($$\frac{a}{b}$$) renders correctly. Inline math inside a sentence or list item (… is $\frac{a}{b}$ ✓) does not render reliably: the user sees the raw source with the dollar signs.
Expected: Inline $…$ renders as math, or there is a documented way to write inline math in the Code tab.
Why it matters: For math tutoring, the model has no way to know inline math will fail, so it mixes both forms and part of the answer comes out as raw LaTeX.
Workaround: Only use $$…$$ on its own line.
