Problem Statement

A recent Claude desktop app update (Code tab, app 2.37337.1 with Claude Code 2.1.296 on macOS 27.0.1) replaced the new-session screen with a folder/environment picker. The usage overview card that used to live on that screen is gone with it.

That card was the one place where I could see my own Claude Code usage at a glance: sessions, messages, total tokens, active days, current and longest streak, peak hour, favorite model, the daily heatmap, the Models breakdown, and the "you've used Nx more tokens than Pride and Prejudice" line. It is my own usage data, generated from logs on my own machine, and there is now no view of it anywhere in the app. Removing it is a regression, not a redesign: nothing replaced it.

The underlying data is clearly still there (several open issues such as #97258 and #101322 are about the accuracy of this very card), so this is about the card having no home in the new UI.

Proposed Solution

Bring the usage overview card back in the desktop app, in a place that is reachable in one step from the Code tab. Any of these would work:

  • Below the folder/environment picker on the new-session screen, where it used to be.
  • A "Usage" entry in the sidebar or the account menu that opens the same card.
  • The same card behind a /usage or /stats command inside a session.

Keep the existing content and ranges (All / 30d / 7d, Overview and Models tabs). Please treat the card as a stable part of the product so it is not dropped again when the new-session screen changes.

Alternative Solutions

I rebuilt the card myself as an artifact page generated from ~/.claude/projects/**/*.jsonl with a small script. It works, but it is a static snapshot, it needs a manual rebuild, and every user who liked the card would have to do the same. The CLI's /cost only covers the current session, and the claude.ai usage page shows plan limits, not this history.

Use Case Example

  1. Open the Claude desktop app, Code tab, to start the day.
  2. Glance at the usage card: streak, active days this month, which model I leaned on, how heavy yesterday was.
  3. Decide how to pace the day against my plan limits and whether to switch models.

Today step 2 is impossible. Before the update it was free.
