Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Every Claude in Chrome tool call that performs an action (tabs_context_mcp, navigate, computer, etc.) fails with:

"claude-sonnet-5 is temporarily unavailable, so auto mode cannot determine the safety of [tool] right now."

This has been happening consistently since 2026-10-10, across multiple days and many retries at different times.

What still works: list_connected_browsers responds normally and correctly shows connected browsers (one marked inUse: true).

What's broken: any tool that actually performs a browser action fails with the same classifier-unavailable error every time.

Already ruled out:

  • Reinstalled the Claude in Chrome extension — same error immediately after reconnect, list_connected_browsers picks up the new connection fine, but action tools still fail.
  • Session permission mode is set to "bypassPermissions" (most permissive) — not a permissions issue.
  • Reproduced across different days (10.10–14.10.2026) and times of day — not a transient blip.

Expected: browser action tools should work, or at least fail with a different/clearer error if this classifier service is down long-term.

What Should Happen?

Browser action tools (tabs_context_mcp, navigate, computer, etc.) should either execute normally, or fail with a clear "service unavailable" error — not loop on the same classifier error for multiple days straight.

Error Messages/Logs

claude-sonnet-5 is temporarily unavailable, so auto mode cannot determine the safety of mcp__claude-in-chrome__tabs_context_mcp right now. Wait a moment and then try this action again. If it keeps failing, continue with other tasks that don't require this action and come back to it later. Note: reading files, searching code, and other read-only operations do not require the classifier and can still be used.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In Claude Code (desktop app, Code tab), with Claude in Chrome extension connected, call any Claude in Chrome tool that performs an action, e.g. tabs_context_mcp with createIfEmpty:true.
  2. Observe the error above instead of the tool executing.
  3. Retry the same call repeatedly over multiple days (reproduced 2026-10-10 through 2026-10-14, many attempts at different times) — same error every time.
  4. Call list_connected_browsers (a different, read-only Claude in Chrome tool) — this one succeeds and correctly lists connected browsers.
  5. Reinstall the Claude in Chrome extension and reconnect — list_connected_browsers immediately sees the new connection, but action tools still fail with the same error.
  6. Session permission mode is already "bypassPermissions" (most permissive) — ruling out a permissions-mode cause.

Additional Information

Session was created 2026-09-18, model claude-sonnet-5, permission mode bypassPermissions. Error reproduced on 2026-10-10, 10-10 (multiple retries), 10-14 (multiple retries) — consistent across 4+ days.
