[Desktop] File pane: rendered Markdown locked to a narrow fixed-width column while tables span full width
What happens
In the Claude desktop app (Code tab), when a .md file is opened in the file pane in rendered mode, paragraphs, headings and lists are capped at a fixed reading width (roughly 900 px) and centred, regardless of how wide the pane is. Tables in the same document ignore that cap and span the full pane width.
The result is a ragged layout: full-width tables between narrow text columns, with large empty margins on both sides of the text. The source view (</>) wraps to the full pane width as expected.
When it started
Around 10 to 12 October 2026, before the app update to 2.37337.1 on 13 October, so it seems to come from the served renderer rather than the app build. Before that, rendered Markdown filled the pane width.
Expected
Rendered text uses the available pane width, or there is a setting or toggle (for example in the pane's ⋮ menu) to switch between a reading column and full width. At minimum, text and tables should share the same width.
Why it matters
Long working documents (review matrices, drafts with tables) are read in this pane all day on a wide screen. The narrow column roughly doubles the scrolling and visually separates tables from the text that explains them.
