[FEATURE] VS Code: keep the message box usable while Claude asks an interactive question
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing requests and this feature hasn't been requested yet
- [x] This is a single feature request (not multiple features)
Problem Statement
In the VS Code extension, when Claude asks an interactive question (AskUserQuestion), the question panel replaces the normal message input box.
While the question is on screen, I cannot type. I often need to finish a thought first, or add context, before I choose an answer. The answer buttons are on screen, but I cannot type my text first.
Result: I must choose an answer without my full message, or cancel the question and lose it.
Proposed Solution
Show the question panel ABOVE the normal message box. Do not replace the message box.
- The message box stays visible and editable while a question is open.
- I can type my text, then click an answer. Both are sent together, or the typed text goes as an extra note to the answer.
- A draft in the message box is not lost when the question appears or when I answer it.
Alternative Solutions
Currently I must answer first and type my extra text in the next message. Or I choose "Other" and type there. Both ways break my flow, because I must decide before I finish my thought.
Priority
Critical - Blocking my work
Feature Category
Interactive mode (TUI)
Use Case Example
- I send a task to Claude and start typing a follow-up.
- Claude asks a question with 3 options.
- The question replaces my message box. My typing stops.
- I want to finish my sentence, then pick option 2.
- Today I cannot. With the proposed change, I finish my text, then click option 2.
