Problem Statement

In the Code tab of the desktop app, the new-session screen pre-fills the folder the last session used, and there is no setting to change that. Most of my sessions are quick questions and one-off tasks that belong in "No folder", so I have to clear the pre-filled folder each time. When I forget, the session starts inside an unrelated project, loads that project's CLAUDE.md, and uses that folder's saved permission mode.

Proposed Solution

A "Default folder for new sessions" setting in Settings > Claude Code with three choices: Last used folder (today's behavior), No folder, or a specific folder I pick. With "No folder" chosen, the new-session screen always opens with no folder selected, and I pick one only when the session needs it.

Alternative Solutions

Clearing the folder by hand on every new session. I also checked whether a mod (a plugin hooks module) could do it. It can't: a mod loads after the session has started, and a session.start hook cannot change the session's folder.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Feature Category

Configuration and settings

Use Case Example

  1. I finish a session in a website repo.
  2. I start a new session to ask an unrelated question.
  3. The new-session screen has the website repo pre-filled. If I don't notice, the session starts in that repo.
  4. With the setting on "No folder", the session starts with no folder and I do nothing extra.

Additional Context

Claude desktop 2.31226.1, macOS 15.8, Code tab, local sessions.

Related: #91092 asks for a pinned default folder, which the same setting would cover. #74679 asked for an option to start each new session blank and was closed as completed, but I can't find that option in the app. #86119 asked for the same and was closed as stale.
