Auto mode: terminal-only "Teach auto mode about your environment?" offer blocks Remote Control sessions; a stray Enter opens /auto-mode-setup
What happens
In auto mode, the "Teach auto mode about your environment?" offer appears in the terminal only, in place of the prompt box, at the end of a turn. Remote Control clients (Claude app, claude.ai/code) never see it. The session just looks busy.
The next Enter that reaches the terminal picks the default, "Yes". Text typed into the pane by a script (for example /rename … followed by Enter) is swallowed by the offer and that Enter accepts it. Claude Code then submits /auto-mode-setup. With existing autoMode entries in settings, the wizard opens on "You already have auto-mode entries — add to them, or start fresh?", which is also terminal-only. The session stays blocked until someone sends Escape to the terminal, and that also discards whatever the user had queued.
We run long-lived Remote Control sessions in tmux on a dedicated Mac. This froze two of them in 24 hours. It is the same class of problem as #80806, a terminal-only approval that Remote Control clients never get.
Version: 2.1.296 (also seen on 2.1.292/2.1.293), macOS, auto mode, sessions started with --remote-control inside tmux.
Repro
- In a config dir where
~/.claude.jsonhasnumStartups≥ 5 andautoModeEnvSetup.denials= 5 (five auto-mode classifier refusals, any session), with noautoMode.environmentin settings and some otherautoModeentry present (we have anallowrule). - Start a session in auto mode and run one turn. The offer replaces the prompt box when the turn ends.
- From outside, run
tmux send-keys -t <pane> -l "/rename test"and thentmux send-keys -t <pane> Enter. - The rename never happens and the "auto-mode entries" wizard opens. In a Remote Control client, nothing is shown.
What would help
- Show the offer (and the wizard) in Remote Control clients, or don't show it in sessions that have Remote Control enabled.
- Don't let a single Enter that arrives with other input accept it, or default the focus to "Not now".
- Document the off switch.
"skillOverrides": {"auto-mode-setup": "off"}turns it off and takes effect in running sessions, but we only found it by reading the bundle.
