What happens
Each time a Claude Code Session starts in a VS Code integrated terminal, Claude Code runs code --list-extensions --show-versions. On macOS that code call is a full Electron launch, and each one leaves a new cli.log directory under ~/Library/Application Support/Code/logs/.
On a day with many Sessions this adds up: 95 cli.log directories on one day (2026-10-08), and 20 more by mid-morning the next day. Each launch costs noticeable CPU and startup time.
Expected
Check for the extension once and cache the result, or read ~/.vscode/extensions/extensions.json (or the TERM_PROGRAM/VSCODE_* env vars) rather than starting the code CLI on every Session start.
Environment
- Claude Code 2.1.295 (CLI in the VS Code terminal, VS Code extension 2.1.295)
- VS Code 1.140.0
- macOS (arm64)
Repro
- Open a VS Code integrated terminal and run
claudeseveral times. - Watch
ls ~/Library/Application\ Support/Code/logs/: a new directory with acli.logappears for each start.
