Desktop app: sidebar custom-group membership and session titles do not sync across devices; Remote Control rows cannot be grouped

Summary

In the Claude desktop app's Code tab, custom sidebar groups are the primary way I organize sessions by company. Group names sync between my two Macs within minutes. Group membership and session titles do not, and sessions served from the other machine over Remote Control cannot be filed into a group.

Setup

  • Mac Studio (host): Claude desktop app, Remote Control on, ~20 active Code sessions, six custom groups.
  • MacBook Pro (client): same account. Most of my sessions from the MacBook are started over Remote Control and run on the Studio.
  • Both machines have the same repository cloned.

Observed

  1. Renaming a group on the Studio appeared on the MacBook within minutes (names sync).
  2. Sessions filed into groups on the Studio appear under Ungrouped on the MacBook (they show as Remote Control rows there). The reverse also holds.
  3. Sessions renamed on the Studio keep their old titles on the MacBook for hours.
  4. From a Code session on the MacBook, move_sessions only affects MacBook-local sessions; the Studio's rows are not listed by list_sessions there, so they cannot be filed by Claude either (same finding on 2026-10-01).
  5. Group by → Folder groups worktree sessions by the worktree's random name (for example quirky-lederberg-310d68), not by the folder chosen when the session was started, so it is not a substitute for custom groups.

Expected

A session's group membership and title travel with the session, so that the same account sees the same organization on every device, including for sessions served over Remote Control. Ideally a Remote Control row can be filed into a group from the client machine, or the group is inherited from the host.

Why it matters

I work on five companies from one account and two Macs. The sidebar groups are how I keep that straight; when half the rows show as Ungrouped on one machine, the organization has to be redone by hand per device, and Claude cannot do it for me because the rows are not addressable from the other machine.

Versions: desktop app current as of 2026-10-07 (macOS), Claude Code CLI bundled with the app.
