[BUG] Windows desktop app: startup helper lists a remembered Code-tab folder on a Google Drive virtual drive, hangs unkillably, and blocks the app from relaunching
Environment
- Windows 11, build 10.0.26200.9457
- Claude Desktop (MSIX) 2.19675.1, later updated to 2.26454.0
- Bundled Claude Code 2.1.288 (fallback 2.1.286)
- Google Drive for desktop, streaming mode, mounted as J:
- Git is not installed
- Paths below are redacted as J:\<drive folder>. The real path contains spaces and non-ASCII characters.
What happens
The Code tab remembers a last-used folder on the Google Drive virtual drive
(J:\<drive folder>). On app start, with no session focused, the app runs a
"temporary query" in that folder. Its file listing hangs inside the Drive file
system driver and can never be killed. When the app later restarts (an update
was downloaded minutes afterwards), it does not come back: launching Claude
shows a suspended "Claude" entry in Task Manager and no window. Only a Windows
reboot fixes it. This happened twice.
Stuck process (Process Explorer)
- Image: ...\Claude\claude-code\2.1.288\36aa8c97bf86\claude.exe
- Command line: rg --no-config --files --hidden "J:\<drive folder>"
- Current directory: the same J: path
- Parent: non-existent process
- One thread, state Wait:Executive, 0 CPU time, 27 context switches
- taskkill /F /T: "could not be terminated, no running instance of the task"
- Task Manager, End task: "Access denied"
- Handle search for the PID: 0 matches. Thread stack: "Error accessing thread"

Expected
- A background file listing should have a timeout and must not leave an orphaned child process.
- One hung helper should not stop the app from relaunching or updating.
- The app should not run background queries in a remembered folder on a network or virtual drive when no session is open.
Suspected, not confirmed
That the stuck helper is what blocks the relaunch. The log excerpt ends before the restart.
Workaround
Set the Code tab's folder to a local path.
