[BUG] VS Code extension Shift + Drag and Drop file in chat window not working
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
The Claude Code extension used to allow for dragging files from the Explorer File Tree view or a Tab for a file to be added into the Claude Code chat field: Shift + drag file.
I updated VS Code and this functionality no longer works.

Similar issue in previous report: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/9092
Same here on 2.1.292, VSCode, MacOS
Same issue on macOS, still present in VS Code 1.141.0.
Key detail: Shift + drag from Finder into the Claude Code chat still works fine.
Only Shift + drag from the built-in VS Code Explorer (file tree) is broken —
the file is not added to the chat.
doesn't reach the webview at all
Updating both VS Code and the extension to latest did not help.
Root cause is upstream in VS Code / Electron, not in this extension:
cross-site drag target check within the same WebContents.
vscode-webview://), so anExplorer → webview drag is now rejected by the browser before any JS drop
handler runs. Finder drags come from the OS and are unaffected.
Tracked in microsoft/vscode#339036 (also #339278), assigned to the 1.142.0 milestone.
Workaround until then: downgrade to VS Code 1.139.x, or use Option+Cmd+K /
@to reference files.
