Problem Statement

The bug report form has a required Terminal/Shell dropdown whose choices are terminals, a CI option and Other. Someone reporting a bug in the Claude desktop app has no choice that fits, so the field ends up as Other, a terminal, or a typed-in value. As a result, the field doesn't show which surface a report came from, although desktop reports make up a large share of bug issues (label area:desktop).

Of the last 100 bug issues labeled area:desktop, 37 have this field filled in:

  • 17 chose Other.
  • 17 chose a terminal: Terminal.app 6, PowerShell 6, Windows Terminal 3, Cursor 1, WSL 1. Some of these may name the shell the desktop session ran rather than where the bug happened.
  • 3 typed in their own value: "Claude Desktop (Code tab)", "Claude Desktop (Code tab) — not a terminal session" and "N/A".

Proposed Solution

Add a Claude desktop app option to the Terminal/Shell dropdown in .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.yml, after Xterm:

         - Xterm
+ - Claude desktop app
         - Non-interactive/CI environment
         - Other

I prepared this one-line change as a pull request, but pull requests on this repository can only be opened by collaborators, so I'm filing it here instead.

Alternative Solutions

  • Rename the field so it asks where Claude Code ran (terminal, IDE or desktop app): Covers every surface, but it is a bigger change to the form.
  • Rely on the area:desktop label added during triage: Works once someone has triaged the issue, but the form itself doesn't record it.

Priority

Low - Nice to have

Feature Category

Other

Use Case Example

  1. I report a bug in the desktop app's in-app Browser (#99220).
  2. The form requires a Terminal/Shell choice and none applies, so I choose Other and explain the setup under Additional Information.
  3. With this option I would choose "Claude desktop app", and the field alone would show where the bug happened.

Additional Context

The counts come from gh issue list --repo anthropics/claude-code --label area:desktop --label bug --state all --limit 100, taking the "Terminal/Shell" section of each issue body (2026-10-03).
